Abstract

Pathways to higher education - A reconstructive study on the biographical significance of the university entrance examination

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

Transitions between vocational and higher education are a central topic in higher education research, although they haven’t been the focus of reconstructive biographical research. This dissertation analyses the ‘examination for the acquisition of a subject-related higher education entrance qualification based on previous vocational training’ (referred to as ‘Z-Prüfung’) and its significance in the individual biographies in the context of lifelong learning and further possibilities of university access for people with vocational qualifications. On the basis of biographical-narrative interviews, the results show that the university access examination is part of reorientation in life, work-related continuity, or identity work, which demonstrates the different significances. The results illustrate processes of emancipation, self-finding or self-fulfilment in its biographical context.
