Abstract

This chapter examines emerging practises of displaying contested indigenous artifacts at the Akaroa Museum on Banks Peninsula, New Zealand, considering values and belief systems of indigenous groups. Drawing on archival research, qualitative interviews with museum staff and visitors, the history of the museum and the object biography of a repatriated life cast of Māori chief Takatahara are depicted. The chapter shows how the repatriation of the life cast prompted a slow change in displaying indigenous artifacts from an ethnographical mode of display perpetuating the colonial gaze to a collaborative model, that acknowledges and reflects Māori believe systems and expectations.
