Abstract

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a non-invasive method used to investigate brain oscillations. tACS can elicit persistent alterations of brain activity in specific frequency bands. This effect is not universal and it is necessary to explore factors influencing the outcome of α-tACS. Here, two studies are introduced exploring the role of stimulation duration and environmental illumination on the occurrence of aftereffects. In the 1st study, an increase in α-power was replicated after 10 min of α-tACS but not after shorter durations. In the 2nd study, both darkness and tACS caused an increase in posterior α-power. Both studies suggest a causal role of mismatch between tACS-frequency and individual α-frequency on the outcome of stimulation. The implications of both findings are discussed in their ability to explain the absence of tACS-aftereffects in the field.

Die Rolle beeinflussender Faktoren auf die Wirksamkeit transkranieller Wechselstromstimulation

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]
