Abstract

The research interest of this cumulative habilitation text focusses on how to analyse storytelling in picturebooks in the context of current processes of media convergence and the medium’s rising permeability to other arts. A theoretical framework surveys multimodal structure und bimedial storytelling in picturebooks, whereas the cumulus develops and deepens specific aspects of different methodological approaches in three extensive chapters: Narrative Strategien, Kindheitsbilder und Bilder von Kindheit and Kinderliterarische und illustrationsgeschichtliche Traditionslinien und mediale Bezugssysteme. My considerations oft he methods lead to the result, that analysis of modes of storytelling in picturebooks cannot be pursued as a scheme or pattern of formal-aesthetic rules. Rather a necessity of method pluralism turns out to be obvious. Perceiving picturebooks as literary and pictoral artwork requires the consideration of their complex narrative structures, which are also interwoven on various levels with contemporary medial and artistic references.
