Abstract

The well-being of Elementary School students : social and emotional school experiences at Elementary School

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

In addition to the cognitive development, the development of social and emotional skills in elementary school is deemed very important. However, while the cognitive performance of children is frequently evaluated, social and emotional aspects are rarely investigated. To address this issue, the present study places the focus of attention on the school-related well-being. For this purpose, 742 elementary school students were examined using a questionnaire survey and a short interview regarding the components attitude towards school, joy of learning, social integration and academic self-concept as well as various potential predictors. Additionally, the teachers were asked to answer questions regarding the well-being of their students. Following the evaluation of the survey, a semi-standardized interview was conducted with selected children from the survey group. The results show that the majority of elementary school students feel well at their school. However, there are large differences between different groups of students. It is also apparent that it is difficult for teachers to accurately assess the well-being of their students.
