Abstract

Ausgehend von der Emanzipation aller Untertanen im Österreichischen Kaiserreich 1867 fragt die Arbeit nach der Lebenswirklichkeit der jüdischen Bevölkerung um die Jahrhundertwende. Für diese Zeit der gesellschaftlichen Etablierung des Antisemitismus wird untersucht, wie die jüdische Bevölkerung die gesamtgesellschaftliche Situation wahrnahm und welche Schlüsse sie daraus für sich zog. Dabei geht es sowohl um ihre Einschätzungen zum Antisemitismus und zu Reichsgesetzen als auch um die Frage nach Reaktionsmöglichkeiten über die Auseinandersetzung mit den verschiedenen Identitätsangeboten (Assimilation – Orthodoxie – Zionismus). Zudem wird aufgezeigt, welche Urteile sich im Laufe des Untersuchungszeitraums verfestigten und welche Bewertungen einen Wandel erfuhren. Die Annäherung an die zeitgenössische Perspektive erfolgt hierbei über jüdische Periodika, die einen Zugang zum inner-jüdischen Diskurs über Erfahrungen und Zukunftsprognosen ermöglichen.

Anti-Semitism – Law – Concepts of Identity. Topics Covered in Jewish Periodicals in the Late Habsburg Monarchy (1890-1911)

Taking as its starting point the emancipation of all subjects in the Austrian Empire in 1867, this study examines the reality of life for the Jewish population at the turn of the century. For this period, marked by the societal entrenchment of anti-Semitism, the study examines how the Jewish population perceived the broader social situation and what conclusions they drew from it for themselves. The study addresses both their assessment of anti-Semitism and imperial laws, as well as the question of possible responses through an examination of the various identity options available (assimilation, Orthodoxy, and Zionism). Furthermore, the study highlights which views became entrenched over the course of the study period and which assessments underwent a change. The contemporary perspective is explored through Jewish periodicals, which provide access to the intra-Jewish discourse on experiences and predictions for the future.
