Abstract
In der Dissertation geht es um die Entwicklung der lettischen Nation von einem „Bauernvolk“ zu einem politisch selbstbewussten Nationalstaat. In diesem Kontext werden die im Prozess der Nations- und Staatsbildung zwischen 1914 und 1921 verwendeten Stereotypen beleuchtet. Im Vordergrund steht dabei die Frage: Welche Bedeutung hatten Stereotype für die Formierung lettischer Identität. Darüber hinaus wird die Frage untersucht, welche Motive hatten die Menschen, sich dem lettischen Staat anzuschließen und ihn zu unterstützen. Dazu wurden einfache bekannte Muster und in der Bevölkerung verständliche Motive untersucht, wie zum Beispiel ein idealisierter Geschichtsmythos, gemeinsames Feindbild und das Bild der geeinten idyllischen archaischen Familie.

This dissertation delves into the metamorphosis of the Latvian nation from a predominantly agrarian society to a politically self-assured nation-state against the backdrop of the First World War. Within this framework, it scrutinises the stereotypes wielded during nation and state formation processes from 1914 to 1921. Central to the investigation is the inquiry: What significance did stereotypes hold in shaping Latvian identity? Additionally, it explores the motivations underlying individuals’ affiliations with and support for the Latvian state. To this end, the study examines simplistic yet ubiquitous tropes and motifs comprehensible to the populace, including an idealised historical narrative, a shared portrayal of adversaries, and the depiction of an idyllic, unified family structure.
