Abstract

“The Representation of Disability in Contemporary American Television Series” is a representation-critical analysis of physical and physically marked intellectual disability in contemporary American television series. Two case studies, Breaking Bad (2008-2013) and American Horror Story (2011-), serve to explore the potentials and pitfalls that the narrative form of complex TV has for the normative representation of people and lives with disabilities as well as disability itself. The analysis also contrasts representational patterns from more established narrative forms, particularly cinema and the novel. In doing so, the study shows that complex television series may frequently fall back on these more traditional patterns of representation. However, by way of their idiosyncratic narrative structures, complex television series nevertheless offer many subversive and potentially transformative readings of disability.

„The Representation of Disability in Contemporary American Television Series“ ist eine repräsentationskritische Analyse körperlicher und körperlich markierter geistiger Behinderung in zeitgenössischen US-amerikanischen Fernsehserien. Anhand zweier Fallbespiele, Breaking Bad (2008-2013) und American Horror Story (2011-), wird durchleuchtet, welche Potenziale und Fallstricke die Erzählform der komplexen Fernsehserie für die normative Repräsentation von Menschen und Leben mit Behinderung sowie Behinderung selbst hat. Kontrastierend werden dabei auch tradierte Repräsentationsmuster etablierterer Erzählformen, vor allem der Kinofilm und der Roman, in den Blick genommen. So wird gezeigt, dass die komplexe Fernsehserie zwar immer wieder nicht umhinkommt, auch auf diese tradierten Muster zurückzugreifen. Doch vor allem über ihre idiosynkratischen Erzählstrukturen ermöglicht die sie dennoch zu einer Vielzahl subversiver und potenziell transformativer Lesarten von Behinderung.
