Abstract

Learners' conceptions of the structure of computing systems: a multi-method study of learning prerequisites in the context of thinking in parts of wholes

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

This thesis presents a multi-method study of learners' conceptions of the structure of computing systems. It is based on a constructivist theory that understands prior conceptions as prerequisites for learning, which have to be addressed in classes. Within the theoretical foundation, thinking in parts of wholes is considered as a prerequisite for understanding computing systems and accordingly taken into account in designing the research instruments. The analysis of conducted concept mapping interviews and drawings, in which participating students externalized their internalized conceptions, shows, that learners form a variety of conceptions about the structure of computing systems, some of which turn out to be deficient. By presenting methodological possibilities, a selection of the elaborated conceptions is made accessible for taking up in classes.
