Abstract

Bis(2-tert-butyl-4,5,6-trimethylphenyl)stannylene I, the first diaryl stannylene that is substituted asymmetrically in ortho position, was recently synthesized in our working group and characterized by some first reactions. This molecule which is available in the solid state as dimer exhibits some structural characteristics that are not completely elucidated yet. Reactions of I with isocyanides did not yield the expected adducts. Instead, an octastannacubane was formed via thermal splitting of I and combination of the stannylene fragments. Attempts to the synthesis of new, reactive diaryl stannylenes with smaller substituents did not lead to the expected products. Instead, tetramers were received, among them a 1,3-dibromo tetrastannacyclobutane. By dehalogenation of this unusual molecule the first stable singlet biradical known in tin chemistry could be realized.
