Abstract

In unstable, changing fields, companies must open up their innovation processes and integrate the technical knowledge of heterogeneous actors (customers, suppliers, development partners, research institutions and approval bodies) to develop new technologies in accordance with set quality targets and time frames, despite potentially inconsistent technical requirements. However, cooperation agreements and intellectual property rights are not sufficient for inducing knowledge-sharing among development partners. Rather – and this is the central thesis of this dissertation - the success of open innovation processes depends on social norms and bind-ing expectations that emerge out of the process of technology development. In order to verify this social mechanism, the dissertation investigates reasons for the failure of technology development in six innovation projects in the wind energy industry.

In instabilen, im Wandel begriffenen Feldern müssen Unternehmen ihre Innovationprozesse öffnen, um das technische Wissen heterogener Akteure (Kunden, Zulieferer, Entwicklungspartner, Forschungseinrichtungen, Zulassungsstellen) zu integrieren und Technologieprojekte trotz potenziell inkonsistenter technischer Anforderungen innerhalb gegebener Zeit- und Qualitätsvorgaben zu realisieren. Damit die Entwicklungspartner ihr Wissen preisgeben, reichen Kooperationsverträge und Schutzrechte jedoch nicht aus. Vielmehr - so die zentrale These der Dissertation - basiert der Erfolg offener Innovationsprozesse auf sozialen Normen und verpflichtenden Erwartungen der kollaborativen Technologieentwicklung und Wissensintegration, die erst im Einführungsprozess institutionalisiert werden. Um diesen sozialen Mechanismus anhand von sechs Innovationsprojekten in der Windenergieindustrie empirisch zu überprüfen, fragt der Autor daher zugespitzt, woran die Einführung innovativer Technologien scheitert.
