Abstract

Trifolium ornithopodioides is a diploid species (2n = 16). In Germany, it occurs at the North Sea on the Eiderstedt peninsula, exclusively. The species is more widely distributed there than has been assumed until now. Birdsfoot Clover occurs only on seadikes that are intensively grazed by sheep. The species occurs in the plant community Lolio perennis-Cynosuretum cristati . T. ornithopodioides is a winter-green species. Its breeding system is characterized by obligate autogamy. According to current knowledge the species is synanthropic in Germany. Coastal defense measures are the only threat to the species which annually reproduces millionfold on the Eiderstedt peninsula.
