Abstract

This doctoral dissertation -based on empirical data- provides a general survey of the history, function and development of the in-derivation of female names of profession in German. In order to explain its meaning development it is applied to the prototypetheoretical approach. Further morphems and lexemes that are used for the composition of female names of profession are described and listed in an extensive appendix. A corpus of words of female and male nomina agentis is extracted from three kinds of text (approx. 44.000 samples). The analysis demonstrates that in-derived female nomina agentis are used for more than 30 different varieties of meaning. In prior research the common practice to explain the way of disambiguity of polysemy is to refer to the expertise of the listeners. In contrast, results from this study indicate that as long as this expertise is not based on theoretical and methodological prerequisites of language, it has to be seen problematic. By means of a prototype theoretical approach the analysis traces preferences -that are typical for a certain period of time- for the ascription of certain meanings.
