Abstract

Sustainable urban planning requires compact housing solutions. This conflicts, however, with our preference for living in detached family houses and the correspondingly intensive use of building land. Between these opposing positions I ex-amine the potential for exploiting the available open spaces for the benefit of residents. In this respect it is not the housing density itself which inhibits the use of open spaces - a quantitative analysis alone will not provide solutions for open space usage. To this end I propose in this paper a socio-psychological model for the assessment of open spaces adjacent to housing areas. The model takes the sociological theory of the split between public and private spheres in city life, and grafts it onto the psychological concept of privacy regulation. Two German urban conglomerations, Vauban in Freiburg and Südstadt in Tübingen, serve as objects for the discourse and provide practical examples of the model being implemented.
