Abstract

Die 1990er Jahre leiten in der Bilderbuchliteratur eine Phase der umfassenden Entgrenzung ein. Ziel der Dissertation ist die Darlegung des weiten Spektrums der Prozesse von Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten in der Bilderbuchliteratur seit 1990, die gekennzeichnet sind von neuen medialen Konzepten, non-linearen Erzählstrukturen, veränderten Zugängen zu Genderkonstruktionen und einer neuen Hinwendung zur Materialität. Diese Entwicklungslinien der 1990er Jahre werden vor dem Hintergrund der Bilderbuchliteraturgeschichte und in Beziehung zu unterschiedlichen wirkungsmächtigen Kontexten wie historischen und gegenwärtigen bildkünstlerischen und literarischen Strömungen, Erkenntnissen aus Pädagogik und Entwicklungspsychologie, politischen, historischen und soziokulturellen Kontexten, Entwicklungen des Buchmarkts und der Mediengeschichte entwickelt. Im Weiteren wird das Erscheinungsbild des Bilderbuchs der 1990er Jahre durch Aussagen von Illustratoren und Illustratorinnen in einer empirischen Befragung ergänzt und an Beispielreihen illustrativer Innovation, u.a. im Umgang mit Klassikern visualisiert und belegt. Abschließend stellt sich nicht nur die Frage nach dem Erscheinungsbild gegenwärtiger Bilderbuchkultur, sondern auch nach seinem Potential. Was könnte also Bilderbuchkultur heute sein?

The 1990ies introduce a phase of extensive delimitation into the literary genre of the picture book. The PhD thesis shows a wide spectrum of new medial concepts, non-linear narrative structures, a variety of gender constructions and different dealings with materiality that are characteristic of processes of continuity and discontinuity. These developments in picture books from the 1990ies are understood as part of the history of the genre. Historical and contemporary tendencies in literature and art, as well as new insights in education and developmental psychology, political, historical, and socio-cultural contexts and developments in the media and the book market, were all seen as effectively influential to the new model picture book. The statements of illustrators taken from an additional empirical study supplement the perspective and examples of new ways of illustrating the classics like Grimms fairytales or Der kleine Häwelmann are given to underpin continuity as well as delimitation. In summary the question is not only what the contemporary picture book looks like but also what its potential might be. What could picture book culture be today?
