Abstract

Instead of an editorial introduction, we editors would like to introduce this first volume on the one hundredth anniversary of Low German philology in Rostock with an overview of the history of the subject. The developments in Rostock are the starting point and constant reference point of our overview, whereby the Mecklenburgisches Wörterbuch (Mecklenburg dictionary) and the dialect lexicography in retrospect prove to be a constant in Rostock's research and subject history and accordingly run through the following sketch as a red thread. From Rostock, however, the view is repeatedly expanded to include conditions and developments at other locations in the Low German academic landscape. The time span we are considering ranges from the earliest precursors of Low German philology in the second half of the 16th century to essential developments in the recent present.
