Abstract

Middle Low German literature and language have twice featured prominently in the history of the Verein für niederdeutsche Sprachforschung (“Sprachverein”): in 1875 in the first volume of the Low German Language Association’s Yearbook with a contribution by August Lübben “Zur Characteristik der mittelniederdeutschen Literatur” (On the Characteristics of Middle Low German Literature) and in 1925 in the 51st volume with a contribution by Agathe Lasch “Vom Werden und Wesen des Mittelniederdeutschen” (On the Development and Nature of Middle Low German). In view of this, the question arises as to what role the subject of ‘Middle Low German’ actually played in early research on Low German until the founding of the Sprachverein in 1874/1875 and in the following years. Middle Low German certainly had a firm place in philological research when August Lübben and Agathe Lasch devoted themselves to it. But this was not a matter of course. For, as will be shown in the following, Middle Low German as an object of philological research initially required explanation, even justification. In this context, August Lübben and, after him, Agathe Lasch each offered a new perspective on Middle Low German language and literature. From a retrospective point of view, these were important steps in the formation of the discipline of ‘Low German philology’.
