Abstract

Die vorliegende Dissertation befasst sich mit dem öffentlichen lokalen Konflikt um die Eröffnung einer Asylunterkunft in Berlin-Hellersdorf im Sommer 2013. Dabei werden die Sicht- und Umgangsweisen der involvierten Akteur*innen und Gruppen mit diesem Ereignis fokussiert, kontextualisiert und analysiert. Zurückgegriffen wird dazu auf die Untersuchung verschiedener Textmaterialien (Statements auf Homepages/Blogs, Pressemitteilungen, veröffentlichte Interviews, Demonstrationsreden). Ein zentraler Befund ist die Re_Produktion von Rassismus: So ist ein verkürztes Rassismusverständnis zu konstatieren, welches die gesamtgesellschaftliche Vermitteltheit von Rassismus ausblendet, indem dieser bspw. primär mit Gewalt oder mit bestimmten (Personen-)Gruppen in Zusammenhang gebracht wird. Des Weiteren wird eigenes Involviertsein in rassistische Strukturen dethematisiert, und es werden nahezu ausschließlich Bilder von Flüchtlingen artikuliert, die diese als Hilfsbedürftige re_präsentieren. Die Analyse bietet nicht nur vertiefte Einblicke in einen lokalen Konflikt, sondern liefert auch wichtiges Material für eine politische Bildungsarbeit im Kontext von Flucht/Asyl und sensibilisiert für einen reflexiven Umgang mit darauf bezogenen Konflikten.

The denial of racist normalcy: a racism-critical analysis of racism in the opening of an asylum shelter in Berlin-Hellersdorf in the summer of 2013

This dissertation investigates a public, local conflict surrounding the opening of an asylum shelter in Berlin-Hellersdorf in the summer of 2013. The perspectives and actions of stakeholders and groups who were involved in the event are focused upon, contextualized and analyzed. To this end, various texts (statements on websites/blogs, press releases, published interviews, speeches held during rallies) are examined. A central finding is the reproduction of racism: a limited understanding of racism which ignores larger, societally present and conveyed forms of racism is evident. Instead, racism is linked primarily to violence, certain persons or certain groups of persons. Furthermore, articulation of a person's own involvement in racist structures is avoided in favor of creating images representing refugees almost exclusively as subjects ‘in need of help’. This analysis not only provides insights into a local conflict but offers important material for political education in the context of refugee/asylum issues, and raises awareness for a more considered approach to handling related conflicts.
