Abstract

Teachers and pupils are framing corporate lessons: a frame-analysis of primary school education

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

Based on considerations concerning behavioral literacy the presented dissertation focusses on Frame-Analysis by Erving Goffman and applies it to pedagogical contexts particularly primary school education. The theory based discussion concerning the relevance of frames for primary school lessons is complemented by a qualitative, empirical study. It applies an explorative design to six expert-interviews and 38 questionnaires filled by primary school pupils. The analysis is carried out with regard to determining factors of succeeding or failing tuitional communication and the resulting fitting of frames conducted by pupils and teachers. Furthermore the study scrutinizes possible impact of fitting or non-fitting of frames on educational success. The results of the study underline the importance, Goffmans theoretical approach still has for analysis of interaction in social situations. It becomes obvious that there will be divergent framings of the same social situation amongst the participants. Some elements of the relevant frame seem to be of particular importance. The study gives hint that some elements of a frame are more likely to cause misunderstanding. Therefore these elements are to be especially considered with regard on tuitional communication.
