Abstract

This thesis reports on advances in the physics of shock waves at micro scale. Micro shock waves have been a new field in the physics of fluids since the beginning of the 21st century. However, there is still very limited amount of works in this field of study due to technical limitations. Therefore, this thesis focuses on developing novel methods to generate micro shock waves, and then investigates their flow properties. In this work, a laser differential interferometer is mainly applied to perform non-contact measurements of the micro shock flow's trajectory, velocity and density. The results show that in contrast to macroscopic shock waves, shock waves at micro scale have different propagation and attenuation mechanism. Different from other reports using pressure transducers, the current setup for density measurements resolve the whole micro shock flow system for the first time.
