Abstract

Investigations on the link between brain oscillations and brain functions are mainly based on correlations. The causal relationship, however, so far remained largely unclear. In theory, to probe the causal relationship of oscillations and behavior external rhythmic stimulation can be applied to alter ongoing oscillations (entrainment) and observe the resulting behavioral changes. This dissertation aimed to investigate the effect of a focused flickering light on the brain, producing the so called Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP); a rhythmic voltage change in the occipito-parietal cortex. The performed studies reveal that the SSVEP reflects entrainment, thus represents externally driven brain oscillations. This finding evaluates a rhythmic flickering light stream as an eligible tool to study causality of oscillations and behavior, an important step towards understanding brain oscillations. Furthermore, it is shown here that visual perception can be altered through the flicker, suggesting a causal link between oscillations and perception in the investigated brain areas.

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]
