Abstract

In this thesis, the influences of positive and negative affect state, the personality trait neuroticism, and the hormone estradiol on selective attention are explored in three studies. In Study 1 a double-stream RSVP paradigm was used to explore if attention can be spatially diffused and focused by affect. A spatial interpretation of the diffuse mental state was not found. Study 2 studied the distribution of attention as influenced by neuroticism and cognitive control. Results confirmed that as expected low control lowered relative power difference between the ssVEP responses to the two streams. In Study 3, the effect of fluctuating estradiol over the menstrual cycle on attention was investigated with alpha asymmetry as a possible mediator. Results indicate relationships between alpha and estradiol, and between alpha and performance.

Die Verteilung der Aufmerksamkeit in RSVP Aufgaben und ihre Empfindlichkeit gegenüber Affekten, Persönlichkeitsmerkmalen und Estradiol

Diese Arbeit untersucht den Einfluss von positivem und negativem Affekt, des Persönlichkeitsmerkmals Neurotizismus, und des Hormons Estradiol auf selektive Aufmerksamkeit. In Studie 1 wurde der Affekt in einem double-stream RSVP Paradigma manipuliert, um zu untersuchen ob dadurch Aufmerksamkeit räumlich erweitert oder fokussiert wird. Es konnte kein solcher Effekt nachgewiesen werden. Studie 2 untersuchte den Zusammenhang von Neurotizismus und kognitiver Kontrolle auf die Aufmerksamkeitsverteilung mittels eines ssVEP Paradigmas. Die Ergebnisse zeigen einen negativen Zusammenhang zwischen Neurotizismus und Power-Unterschieden zwischen zwei ssVEP Strömen. In Studie 3 wurde der Einfluss der menstruellen Estradiolschwankung, mit Alpha-Asymmetrie als möglichen Mediator, auf die Aufmerksamkeit erforscht. Die Ergebnisse zeigten Zusammenhänge zwischen Alpha und Estradiol, sowie zwischen Alpha und behavioraler Leistung.
