Abstract

Die Arbeit erforscht historische Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Mensch und Natur im nördlichen Westfalen. Ein besonderes Schwergewicht nehmen Untersuchungen zur Nachhaltigkeit der historischen Nutzungen ein. Das Untersuchungsgebiet (UG) umfasst die vier benachbarten Gemeinden, die Unterschiede sowohl bezüglich des naturräumlichen Potentials als auch der Nutzung durch den Menschen aufweisen. Ziel ist die Beschreibung der Veränderung von Landschaften seit dem Erscheinen der ersten menschlichen Spuren im UG. Ausgewertet werden archäologische Funde, geschichtliche Quellen, Kartenwerke und Relikte historischer Umwelten in der heutigen Kulturlandschaft. Spuren früherer Nutzungen werden in einem Kataster historischer Kulturlandschaftselemente beschrieben und ausgewertet.

This dissertation deals with historical interactions between man and nature in Northern Westphalia. The study puts the main emphasis on the sustainability of historical land use since the appearance of man after the last Ice Age. The study area includes four neighbouring municipalities, which exhibit differences concerning both the natural resources and the their utilisation by the local populations. An important objective is to describe the change of landscapes since the first human beings appeared so that first traces of their activities can be found in the study area. Archaeological finds, historical sources, old maps and remnants of historical activities in forestry, agriculture, hydraulic engineering and other human activities are evaluated in the actual cultural landscape. Traces of former land uses have been detected and are described and evaluated in a list of elements which are typical in the historical culture landscape.
