Abstract

This dissertation focuses on characterizing the model catalyst systems Ni/Al10O13/NiAl(110) and Ge/Al10O13/NiAl(110), employing XPS and STM analysis. The first system shows strong deposit-substrate interaction. The resulting shifts in the XP-spectra are related to particle size and signal overlay effects as well as change of signal intensity ratios. At 375K sintering of the particles can be observed, upon reaching 500K the deposit diffuses through the oxide film. Ni-particles show a complex oxidation behavior, with the catalytic O2-dissociation on the particles being the first step. This is followed by fast oxidation of the particle surface under formation of NiO. Additional oxygen can (a) further oxidize the Ni-deposit or (b) selectively oxidize Al of the NiAl(110). These competitive reactions are diffusion-controlled. Thermal stability of NiO varies with the level of oxidation and decomposition of the NiO-particles results in further Al-oxidation of the NiAl(110). XPS and STM analysis shows, that the interaction between Ge and Al10O13/NiAl(110) is negligible, whereas deposition of Ge on NiAl(110) results in strong deposit-substrate interaction.
