Kurzfassung in :
Are there pains that do not hurt or pains without any painfulness? Is there painfulness without pain or pain affect without pain sensation? If there are such bizarre or outlandish pains, how are they possible and on what grounds are they to be explained? What can they teach us about the very concept of pain or, rather, about the very experience of pain? Can they reveal to us the real complexity of pain; its major constitutional parts and the proper role that they play in overall pain experience? Can they disclose to us wherein lies the real power that pain has over mankind? Do they point to the proper composition of the neural structures and mechanisms that subserve pain? Can we make the relationship between pain experience and its neural grounds intelligble? Do we have to revise our basic intuitions or conceptions of pain under the growth of knowledge in pain research and theory? All these questions and issues are raised and discussed in this book in order to come to the better and more perspicuous insight into one of the most important and intricate phenomenon in human life.
