Abstract

In form of a qualitative single case study this thesis examines what people from industrialized countries such as Germany can learn about sustainability from Lynedoch EcoVillage, South Africa, and the associated 'Sustainability Institute', a non-profit trust based at and operating from Lynedoch EcoVillage which has been working in partnership with the School of Public Management and Planning (SOPMP) at the University of Stellenbosch. Besides a reflection on the terminology of 'Sustainability Innovations', the thesis offers an introduction to Everett M. Rogers' concept of the 'Diffusion of Innovations' (2003) which explains social change based on communication patterns. This concept is applied to the spreading of organic farming in the Lynedoch community and to related activities of the Sustainability Institute.

In Form einer Case Study werden in dieser Masterarbeit Nachhaltigkeitsaktivitäten des Lynedoch EcoVillage, Südafrika, und dem darin angesiedelten 'Sustainability Institute', einer Non-Profit-Organisation, die mit der Universität von Stellenbosch zusammenarbeitet, unter Aspekten der nachhaltigkeitsorientierten Diffusionsforschung analysiert. Dabei wird der Diffusionsprozess des ökologischen Landbaus als Teil eines sehr umfassenden Portfolios an Nachhaltigkeitsaktivitäten fokussiert, welche im Zusammenhang in eine interkulturelle Strategie eingebettet sind, die auf einen Wandel von Lebensstilen zielt. Mit dem Blickwinkel der Arbeit wird der übliche Weg des Erfahrungsaustauschs oder Wissenstransfer mit Bezug auf Nachhaltigkeit von Nord nach Süd umgekehrt und es werden somit Schlüsse bzgl. Nachhaltigkeit für westliche Industrienationen wie Deutschland gezogen. Neben der Einführung in Everett Rogers' Konzept der 'Diffusion of Innovations' und dessen Anwendung auf die Verbreitung des ökologischen Landbaus wird der Begriff der Nachhaltigkeitsinnovationen beleuchtet und erweitert.
