Abstract

Die Dissertation analysiert das Verhältnis zwischen ökonomischem Erfolg, Umweltregulierung und Energiemarktentwicklungen. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass die ökonomischen Folgen der jüngsten Klimapolitik der Europäischen Union gering waren. Ihre Ausgestaltung wird in einen polit-ökonomischen Zusammenhang gestellt. Zudem zeigt die Dissertation die Rolle von Investitionen in umweltfreundliche Technologien und Produkte auf. Die Arbeit eröffnet zudem Einblicke in die ökonomischen Konsequenzen von Energiemarktentwicklungen. Sie enthält eine Analyse der Aktienmarkteffekte des Europäischen Emissionshandelssystems. Darin wird aufgezeigt, dass der Firmenwert europäischer Stromerzeuger vom Preis der Verschmutzungsrechte abhängig ist. Schließlich unterstreicht die Arbeit die ökonomische Relevanz der Energiemärkte. Der Ölmarkt wird als der aus Sicht der Finanzmärkte wichtigste Energiemarkt identifiziert. Weiterhin die belegt Arbeit die Relevanz von Ölpreisschocks für die Arbeitslosigkeit in Deutschland.

This thesis analyzes the relationship between environmental regulation, energy market developments, and economic performance. The thesis shows that the economic impacts of the recently adopted climate policy in Europe have been modest. Moreover, the results indicate the important role which the political economy plays for the design of environmental regulation. The thesis further highlights the role of investment stimulation. The thesis also provides insights into the role of energy market developments for the economy. The relevance of the EU carbon market for the financial performance of European electricity generators is shown. Besides, this thesis demonstrates the importance of oil market developments for the economy. It suggests that the oil market is relevant to the pricing of energy stocks. Finally, the thesis highlights the relevance of oil market developments to the overall economy, in showing that unemployment in Germany is affected by oil price shocks.
