Abstract

The role of the emotion of shame in the development of school absenteeism

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

Although the emotion of shame is believed to have a significant impact on a person’s behaviour – including withdrawal and avoidance behaviours – the phenomenon of school absenteeism has not yet been directly linked to experiences of shame. This triangulation study therefore investigates the role of the emotion of shame in the development of school absenteeism. The first part of the study uses problem-centred interviews to capture the perspectives of students who are absent from school (n = 3) and one of their parents in each case (n = 3). This is followed by a second part of the study, which comprises two group discussions with professionals working on school absenteeism in the fields of education (n = 8) and counselling (n = 7). The findings illustrate – as has been repeatedly reported in the literature – that school absenteeism is a multifactorial phenomenon; shame emerges as a key emotional factor for some of the students.
