Abstract

Based on phenomenological analysis and interpretation of Chekhov’s plays Platonov, 1878, Ivanov, 1887/89, Chajka, 1896, Djadja Vanja, 1897, Tri sestry, 1901 and Višnjëvyj sad, 1904, this dissertation explains the development in the author’s dramatic creation. Subject to interpretation are not only the literary texts; the whole process of cultural development is also understood as a text. This leads to an analogy between the reconstructed meaning of the literary text and the process of cultural development, the latter being itself a production of meaning. From this analogy, which combines the psychoanalytical concept of individual psychic development with the structuralistic method of the analysis of textual equivalences, can be deduced a pattern of cultural development. This development proves to be a degeneration of tragedy by dint of generally accepted individualism and, at the same time, a generation of myth by the poetisation of everyday life, which frees the unique from its social bonding and transforms existential banality into a form of culture.
