Abstract

What are the conceptions of literature amongst 20th- and 21st century Dutch legal elites and to what extent does a reconstruction thereof offer corrections, confirmations or explanations of the prevailing literary-historical image of the Dutch literary field in that era? Research into the literary conceptions of legal professionals has long been hampered by the limited availability of sources, making it hard to better understand the dynamics between the literary and the legal fields. This study addresses that problem by drawing on a broad variety of sources - such as literary trials, archival texts, essays, and personal documents - in order to analyse how the examined legal professionals engage with literature. More specifically, the first part of this book focuses on lawyers in 20thcentury literary trials, reconstructing the poetics and views on the institutional position of literature that emerge from their personal and professional utterances. The second part turns to 21st-century judges’ literary preferences as communicated in the context of a pilot study based on personal interviews.
