Abstract

The emergence of a new type of a school of higher education, the universities of applied sciences, as part of the differentiation process that occurred in tertiary education in Germany in the late 1960s, should have led to a further professional differentiation in higher education. By establishing additional formal employment conditions for professors at universities of applied sciences, a new professional position was created: compared to the university professor, the typical feature of professors at universities of applied sciences is that they are required to demonstrate both their achievements in science and their professional experience outside higher education at the same time. Can a professorship at a university of applied sciences be viewed as an independent professional position or did the differentiation process in tertiary education have a paradox effect in so far as the professorship at universities of applied sciences is broadly similar to a 'would-be' professorship at a university? This question will be answered by analysing the qualifications of professors at universities of applied sciences in Lower Saxony, their professional situation and their expectations before becoming a professor and their assessment of their present professional situation.
