Abstract
Wenn die Beziehungspartner*in die Diagnose ›Demenz‹ erhält, stellt dies eine enorme Herausforderung für das gesamte Paar dar. Denn das Zusammenleben, der Alltag, die Beziehung und die Identität müssen immer wieder aufs Neue ausgehandelt und verändert werden. Dieses Buch rekonstruiert auf Basis einer langjährigen ethnografischen Untersuchung von zwei Paaren, ob und wie diese mit der Herausforderung umgegangen sind und wie die Beziehung durch beide Partner bewahrt werden konnte. Im Fokus stehen Kommunikation und Interaktion, leibkörperliche Performanz, Emotionen und biografische Bezüge.

Couples dealing with a dementia diagnosis in one partner encounter the significant challenge of maintaining their shared daily life and sustaining their relationship. Existing research on partners affected by dementia has focused on various aspects, but there is a limited number of ethnographic studies considering both perspectives simultaneously. This study addresses the communication dynamics within such couples over a three-year period, observing two couples at home and occasionally outside. The research explores how couples communicatively and co-constructively express their relationship, contributing to their staying together despite dementia. The study reveals a case-specific multimodality in relationship-related communication, with each couple having a unique ‘ritual idiom’ sustaining their relationship. The results emphasize the role of shared emotions, symmetry in communication, and the impact of biographical background on communication types. Additionally, the study highlights that partners with dementia can still wield communicative power, and maintaining the couple's relationship promotes the preservation of their personal identity. The findings underscore the importance of in-depth qualitative analyses for a better understanding of individuals with dementia and their caregiving family members, with implications for improving support services in home care.
