Abstract

The aim of this work was to analyse and to develope methods to forecast the surface solar irradiance for solar energy applications with a forecast horizon of up to 3 days based on different numerical weather models. The mesoscale model MM5 was systematically analyzed with respect to its usability for irradiance modelling. Furthermore, a more suitable forecast of the irradiance by the European weather service (ECMWF) has been enhanced for solar energy applications. The accuracy of the forecasting methods were investigated by a detailed quality assessment. The enhanced forecast of the ECMWF achieves, in comparison with existing methods and especially for clear sky situations, improved results. One main focus of the investigation has been the seperation of the forecast accuracy according to the meteorological situation. In addition to the forecast of the global surface irradiance also the forecasted direct and diffuse irradiance was considered.
