Abstract

Modern tests have revealed which barriers to a learning process can arise, when students begin to occupy themselves with natural sciences only at the age of 14 or later. Even though it would seem to be ideal to let children at the age of about 4, who feel the natural urge to explore their environment, also make observations on scientific phenomena and carry out simple experiments under experienced guidance, it was a "first step" to start teaching chemistry to 12- or 13-year-old students as a result of Pisa-outcome. A teacher is often able to understand the difficulties better that students may have with a technically correct interpretation of scientific phenomena when taking the historical course and the aberrations of a science into account. The present paper is considering the didactic approaches of the 19th and beginning 20th century to arouse young people's interest in chemistry and develops a teaching unit with tests carried out by students at the beginning of teaching chemistry with 12- or 13-year-old students. The objective is the introduction of the methods of the science of chemistry in due consideration of the subject field of fire.
