Abstract

The dissertation “Chronopolitical Interventions in the Afterlife of Slavery: Forms and Functions of Temporal Disruptions in Contemporary Speculative Neo-Slave Narratives” focuses on the use of temporal disruptions in anglophone 20th and 21st century speculative neo-slave narratives. It reads those disruptions as chronopolitical interventions that enable speculative neo-slave narratives to not only reflect on the past, but to transform it for the purpose of envisioning different futures. By analyzing a series of contemporary speculative neo-slave narratives, this dissertation examines the ways in which Afrodiasporic writers worldwide challenge conventional notions of temporality in order to raise awareness for continuities of anti-black violence.

Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Verwendung temporaler Disruptionen in zeitgenössischen, englischsprachigen, spekulativen Neo-Slave Narratives. Diese disruptiven Eingriffe in das Zeitgefüge werden als chronopolitische Interventionen gelesen, die es spekulativen Neo-Slave Narratives ermöglichen, über die Vergangenheit nicht nur zu reflektieren, sondern diese auch zu transformieren, um unterschiedliche Zukunftsvisionen hervorzubringen. Mittels einer Analyse einer Reihe zeitgenössischer spekulativer Neo-Slave Narratives zeigt diese Dissertation, wie afrodiasporische Schriftsteller:innen weltweit konventionelle Vorstellungen von Zeitlichkeit in Frage stellen, um ein Bewusstsein für Kontinuitäten rassistischer Gewalt zu schaffen.
