Abstract

The profession „orchestra musician“ — Cultural-political considerations of the development of artistic training in Germany from 1930 to the present

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

The profession of orchestral musician has been in the center of society for several decades. Permanent employment and social security underline the equivalence with other professions, the high reputation is based on the pedagogical and social commitment beyond the adoration of their performative activities. Based on the consideration of the close interrelationship between training, audition and professional activity, this paper follows the research question of the extent to which cultural-political decisions in the educational sector and subject-specific, social demands on the profession have influenced the development of artistic training for orchestral instruments in Germany since 1930. Taking the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München as an example, this paper illustrates how the interactions between these areas are dealt with, including aspects relevant to the profession, and is supplemented by a systematic presentation of teaching structures and content.
