Abstract

Platinum nanoparticles for applications in heterogeneous catalysis: Synthesis and characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

In this work, the results of syntheses of ligand-stabilized platinum nanoparticles and the characterization of monometallic platinum and bimetallic platinum-tin nanoparticles by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are presented. The field of applications of the particles is heterogeneous catalysis. The syntheses of platinum nanoparticles are based on concepts adopted from the literature. By variation of the reaction conditions, particles with sizes and shapes which are not described in the original literature could be obtained. The focus of the XPS-measurement was the characterization of Pt-Sn nanoparticles. In these particles, platinum is metallic while tin is in an oxidized state. The quantitative analysis reveals that tin is enriched at the surface for most of the particles. Changes of the particle properties after a thermal treatment were also investigated.
