Abstract

Epiphytic plants are a highly diverse group grown in tropical forest canopies which are considered particularly vulnerable to future global change. I assessed the effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) with changes in temperature (T), water (WA) and nutrient availability (NA) along different ontogenetic stages of epiphytic bromeliads. I used growth chambers that allowed for the control of different climatic factors. I found that duration of the W period was more important for germination of these plants than its frequency, which emphasizes their stress-tolerance and this effect is modulated by T. Growth was negatively affected by high T at both CO2 levels. Fruits produced at ambient CO2 (aCO2) contained higher number of seeds and growth after reproduction was enhanced by high NA and eCO2. The higher reproductive output at aCO2 implied a higher reproductive cost. Putting together, epiphytes will be relatively unresponsive to future CO2 increase or a strong response may take place in a longer period.
