Abstract

Sedimentation on the California continental margin is strongly influenced by the oceanographic system of the California Current. The structure of the California Current and the closely associated coastal upwelling are highly sensitive to climatic changes. The response of the planktonic primary productivity to these variations allows the investigation of the climatic and oceanographic conditions in this area by organic geochemical methods. During ODP Leg 167 a series of holes was drilled along the California coast, appropriate for the reconstruction of the temporal and spatial history of the paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic conditions on the California continental margin. For organic geochemical investigations marine sediment samples of the last 160 kyr from Sites 1017 (Point Conception, 34N), 1018 (San Francisco, 36N) and 1019 (Eel River-basin, 41N), representing a south-north transect, were analyzed with regard to their bulk and molecular biomarker compositions.
