Abstract

This thesis reports dissolved full water column rare earth element concentrations ([REE]) and neodymium isotope data (ɛNd) from twelve stations along a transect in the West Pacific at unprecedented vertical and lateral resolution for this area. The results indicate coastal input near South Korea and tropical volcanic island margins. The data allow detailed tracing of zonal transport of trace elements within eastward flowing currents to the high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll area in the East Pacific. The results indicate the dominant lateral control on [REE] in the West Pacific and hence the lateral transport of a preformed REE signal. In contrast, ɛNd demonstrates a non-conservative behavior indicating local imprints through boundary exchange at volcanic island margins and submarine ridges in the tropical West Pacific. Additionally, this thesis presents a rapid and precise method for dissolved seawater [REE] analysis that was validated in an international intercomparison study.

Beeinflussung der Seltenen Erdelemente und Neodym Isotopenverteilungen im Westpazifik: lokale Überprägung vs. lateraler Transport

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]
