Abstract

Erosion of strategic competitive advantages on online network markets

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

The erosion of sustainable competitive advantages of platform business models is analyzed within this thesis using the example of photo related online social network sites with presumed network externalities. As a theoretical foundation, aspects from the resource-based view, market-based view and literature addressing the decay and temporal limitation of the competitive advantage are taken in account. The empirical study covers data from 100 social network sites over a period of 13 years. It focusses on the influence of venture capital investments and acquisitions of those platforms regarding the user traffic and success of the underlying websites. To model these, an extended Bass-Model with preferential attachment effects is used. The results cannot confirm common literature postulations. But instead the observations reveal a market share behavior, which could be described as an overlapping series of waves mainly driven by technological change and time.
