Abstract

Commercially available aluminoborosilicate with alkali, earth alkali and soda-lime glass substrates were textured with a pulsed picosecond laser with varying scribing speed and pulse energy. Highly textured substrates showed broadband light scattering. The refractive index of glass substrates changed following ablation. Raman analysis suggested that the variation in the three- and four-fold rings or Si-O-S linkages were responsible for the changed refractive index. Annealing the highly textured glass substrates at 150-450°C reduced the structural modifications. The improved properties of the AZO films on rounded textures were attributed to the enhanced step coverage. The performance of unoptimised solar cells on laser-textured glass substrates was comparable to values reported in literature. Optimizing the deposition conditions and reducing the film thickness are thus expected to improve the performance considerably.
