Abstract

A new plant community growing on the sandy banks of the lower Weser river is described the appearance of which is ordinarily determined by the dominance of Leymus arenarius (Fig. 1). Further it is noteworthy that Festuca arundinacea may also come into prominence at locations where the sand has a low silt content. Besides these two species which are present in every stand of the community, likewise Elymus repens ssp. repens (= Agropyron resp. Elytrigia repens ssp. repens), Phragmites australis and Cirsium arvense reach high presence values, but never determine the appearance of the stands by a high cover-abundance. In syntaxonomical view this community is a floristically clearly defined association now denominated Festuco arundinaceae-Leymetum arenarii (ass. nov.). Based on data from literature and from the shipping authorities of Bremen and Bremerhaven as well as on statements of residents of the lower Weser region who are familiar with the locality and versed in the subject it is shown – in combination with own observations – that the association has developed since about 1935 from small stands of Leymus arenarius which was unknown in this area before and that it has expanded heavily particularly over the past decades. It has developed on sandy banks which were artificially created when the river was deepened. It can be floristically subdivided into three subassociation with several variants and subvariants each. This subdivision mainly reflects an ecological gradation of the subunits according to their locations above the mean high tide, which is explained by the fact that the average of annual flooding decreases significantly with increasing height above the mean high tide. Correlations with the salinity of the water flooding the banks can also be shown for some low-ranking syntaxa. Problems relating to the syntaxonomical status of the association are discussed in a detailed comparison of communities on the basis of a synthetic comparative table.
