Abstract

In 2003 the Saltatoria of the dune island Trischen in the German Wadden Sea were investigated. The island is a postglacial formation of sandbanks that has never been connected to the mainland by a landbridge. It contains natural sand dunes and salt-marsh vegetation types and is prone to erosion by wind and tidal currents. Seven species were found during the study, four Ensifera and three Caelifera. Three species (Chorthippus albomarginatus, Ch. apricarius, Conocephalus dorsalis) were confirmed to reproduce on the island, whereas the remaining four species were most likely visitors to the island from the mainland. The warm summer 2003 might have facilitated travel to the island, and it is postulated that the island may be colonized by two further species (Tettigonia viridissima, Metrioptera roeselii) in the near future.
