Abstract

A study of selected organic contaminants and indicators for the present contamination status in surface sediments of the Jade Bay

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

Content, sources, input and distribution mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic (15 EPA PAHs) and fossil saturated hydrocarbons (selected geochemical biomarkers) were investigated in surface sediments of the Jade Bay (German Bight). The study was based on a high-resolution sampling grid. The very dynamic “Jade Bay system” was described by means of local grain size distribution as well as content and quality (C/N ratios and δ13C signatures) of the organic matter in the sediments. Considering latest assessment criteria the overall contamination of the Jade Bay with PAHs and mineral oil can be classified as insignificant. Polluted harbor sludge from Wilhelmshaven dumped in the inlet area of the bay is a dominating point-source for PAHs and mineral oil. Influenced by current dynamics PAHs (bound to Black Carbon) and unpolluted marine detritus develop a “Jade Bay-specific” relation. A very similar local distribution of PAHs and heavy metals (Beck et al., 2013) leads to the conclusion that PAHs can serve as a tracer for contaminants in the Jade Bay.
