Abstract

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in cavitation bubbles is an analytical method to determine dissolved heavy metals at concentrations down to µg/L. The method has been applied to samples of chromium, manganese, palladium, and indium. Quantitative trace analysis has been achieved down to a limit of detection of 20 ppb of manganese in water. Resonance fluorescence spectroscopy serves as a significant technique to enhance signal intensities by selective excitation of distinct atomic lines. Complex rather unspecific spectra have been evaluated by chemometrics. Principal components analysis is a methodical add-on to enhance the outcome of spectroscopic results obtained from historical iron alloy samples and slag inclusions. An optical method to diagnose the temporal and spatial evolution of cavitation bubbles in liquids has been developed. It enables the dynamics of laser-driven cavitation bubbles and shock waves to be analyzed simultaneously. Various liquids with quite different viscosity and density, i.e. distilled water and glycerine, have been under research.
