Abstract

During the development of chemical processes, it is important to know the influence of an inert solvent on the equilibrium conversion and the kinetics of a reversible reaction. In this work the influence of different inert solvents (n-pentane, THF, benzene, acetone and cyclohexane) on the reversible liquid-phase TAME reaction was investigated in a batch reactor. Since the synthesis and cleavage of TAME show strong non-ideal behavior, activities must be considered in the chemical equilibrium constant and the reaction kinetics. Both equilibrium conversions and courses of reaction in the presence of different solvents could be described correctly, using the thermodynamic models VTPR and mod. UNIFAC (Do). It could be shown, that the conversion of TAME increases in the presence of non-polar solvents, which leads to an increasing activity coefficient of methanol.
