Abstract

The thesis explores various aspects of the tone-noise dichotomy along a two-fold structure: magnitude of tonal content and pitch strength. In a cross-cultural study the perceptual dimensions of noise with added tonal components are investigated with a semantic differential in France, Japan, and Germany. The extracted three-factor solution (evaluation, timbre, power) is stable across cultures. Based on an item bias analysis, the majority of face-value differences found in the items are associated with participants' differential item usage according to cultural background. To investigate the hypothesis whether pitch strength is related to frequency discrimination performance, a segregation experiment is conducted in which the main cue was the pitch strength of the stimuli. The results correlated highly with the frequency discrimination performance. In a magnitude adjustment experiment, it was confirmed that judgments of the magnitude of tonal content are related to the tonal parts' partial loudness. The results indicate that the partial loudness was much easier and more intuitive for participants to adjust than the magnitude of tonal content.
